NWD Achieves Safer Operations at Jalu Oilfield

Known for its extensive experience and ownership of the largest fleet of horizontal rigs in the country, Libya’s National Oil Well Drilling and Maintenance Company (NWD) sought to enhance safety at Jalu Oilfield’s Concession 59 in the eastern Sirte Basin. To achieve this, NWD engaged Qabas to deliver specialized medical first aid training to its employees, fostering a safer working environment aligned with industry standards.

The Situation

Operating within the highly technical and challenging environment of the oil field sector, NWD aimed to bolster its safety protocols at Jalu Oilfield, where the risks associated with drilling operations require stringent safety measures. The company identified a critical need for first aid training tailored to the unique hazards of oilfield environments. Ensuring that their workforce could respond effectively to medical emergencies was essential for maintaining both operational safety and regulatory compliance.

Our Approach

Qabas developed and implemented a targeted first aid training program for NWD employees operating at Jalu Oilfield, focusing on the following key elements:

  1. Needs Assessment and Custom Training Design: We conducted an initial assessment to identify specific health and safety risks within the oilfield environment. The training program was then customised to address these risks, emphasising scenarios relevant to oil drilling and maintenance operations.
  2. Full Medical First Aid Training: Delivered intensive first aid training that covered essential life-saving techniques, including CPR, trauma response, and emergency care specific to the challenges of remote oilfield operations.
  3. Practical Simulations and Emergency Drills: Integrated realistic simulations and drills that allowed employees to practice responding to common oilfield emergencies, ensuring they could apply their skills effectively in real-life situations.
  4. Ongoing Support and Knowledge Reinforcement: Provided additional resources and follow-up sessions to reinforce learning and maintain high levels of preparedness among the workforce.

Implementation

The training was delivered on-site at Jalu Oilfield, ensuring that employees received hands-on experience in their actual working environment. Over a period of two weeks, Qabas trainers guided NWD employees through theoretical lessons, practical exercises, and scenario-based drills. The program was designed to be both rigorous and directly applicable to the specific risks associated with Concession 59 operations, maximizing the relevance and impact of the training.

Results

The implementation of this targeted first aid training led to a significant enhancement in the safety culture at Jalu Oilfield. Employees are now equipped with the critical skills needed to respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies, reducing the potential impact of incidents and ensuring compliance with industry safety standards. The program not only improved operational safety but also reinforced NWD’s commitment to safeguarding its workforce, positioning the company as a leader in safe and responsible oilfield operations within Libya.
