How 1,684 Courses Positioned Mellitah as Libya’s Oil Leader

Producing over 600,000 barrels of oil per day, Libya’s largest oil company stands with operations spanning both onshore and offshore fields, alongside extensive pipeline networks, conferring significant environmental responsibilities on Mellitah Oil & Gas. To demonstrate their commitment beyond mere profit, aiming to ensure environmental compliance, reduce operational risks, and enhance efficiency, Mellitah Oil & Gas engaged Qabas to assist them from inception to completion in the implementation of ISO 14000 at their El Feel oilfield operations.

The Situation

While the overall initiative was extensive, this particular client result focuses on the training conducted during a three years period, primarily in Tripoli and on-site at the El Feel oilfield. The training requirements were varied and wide-ranging, necessitating that most employees underwent multiple training sessions—some up to nine times—to fully grasp the complexities involved.

We were tasked with training over 300 employees from a multitude of departments and associated companies, including administrative affairs, Al-Tilal Company, Arab Drilling Company, communications, corrosion, drilling, finance, geology and planning, industrial security, inspection and maintenance, IT, loss prevention, maintenance, medical clinic, operations, power distribution, production, Rida Company, safety, services, stores, supply, Wadi Al-Haya, among others.

Our Approach

Over a span of three years, we meticulously trained more the employees from the aforementioned departments and companies on critical areas essential for the implementation of ISO 14000. The training was tailored to the specific roles and responsibilities of each employee, with some receiving up to nine sessions, while others attended singularly. The courses delivered included:

  • Accident and Near-Accident Reporting
  • Advanced Electrical Hazards
  • Advanced Firefighting
  • Advanced First Aid
  • Awareness of Chemical and Environmental Risks and Quality Issues
  • Basic Firefighting
  • Basic First Aid
  • Compressed Gases and Pressure Systems in Workplaces
  • Driving Precautions
  • Electrical Hazards and Safe Equipment Usage
  • Fire Safety, Driving Precautions, and Reporting
  • Human Factors and Risk Management
  • Identification of Unsafe Practices
  • Internal Auditing
  • Risk Estimation Techniques
  • Working at Heights

The Result

The training programmes achieved a success rate exceeding 95%, with certain courses surpassing expectations by reaching a 110% completion rate—indicating that the initial objectives were not only met but exceeded.

This wide-ranging training established a robust foundation of practices, significantly contributing to Mellitah Oil & Gas’s successful attainment of ISO 14000 certification. Ultimately, achievement reaffirmed their position as Libya’s oil industry leader, solidifying their commitment to environmental stewardship and operational excellence.
